100th Anniversary Indy 500 Set For Sunday

The 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500 will be run Sunday beginning at noon ET on ABC. It is a celebration for the sport, but typical of the way things are now in racing the event has been somewhat overshadowed by NASCAR this week, with the news that Danica Patrick may be heading to NASCAR full time next season. Patrick is the only woman to ever lead a lap at the Indianapolis 500.

Regardless of that, the race should provide plenty of excitement. Alex Tagliani has the pole position, and our friends at SB Nation Indiana have profiles of all 33 drivers in the field. Patrick, incidentally, qualified 25th in the field.

Over at SB Nation's IndyCar website, Pop Off Valve, the reaction to Patricks impending move to NASCAR seems to a hearty 'don't let the door hit you on the way out, sweetheart.'

The interest level in IndyCar here in New York might not be what it is in other parts of the country. In fact, 'might' is probably not strong enough. The Indy 500, though, is one of its sport's great spectacles, and still one of the premier sporting events in the country. Tune it in Sunday while enjoying your Memorial Day weekend.
