NCAA Lacrosse Tournament Scores: Maryland Stuns Syracuse, 6-5, In Overtime

Despite mounting a two-goal fourth quarter comeback Sunday afternoon to send the game into overtime, the top-seeded Syracuse Orange fell, 6-5, to the unranked Maryland Terps in a NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinal game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. Grant Catalino netted the game winner with 33 seconds remaining in the four-minute sudden victory period to help the Terps (12-4) advance to next Saturday's semifinal contest against the winner of No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Duke (currently on ESPNU).

Trailing 5-3 heading into the fourth quarter, the Orange (15-2) scored two goals, each by seniors Jeremy Thompson and Jovan Miller, who netted his with 1:05 to play in the game, to send the contest into overtime. In OT, SU's best chance to win came on a fast-break opportunity sparked by sophomore Kevin Drew, who missed high on his shot attempt. Maryland scored on its next possession.

The loss marks the end of the careers of seniors Thompson, Miller, leading-goal scorer Stephen Keogh and goaltender John Galloway, who ends his collegiate career as the NCAA's winningest goaltender.

Maryland continues its impressive run -- last Sunday the Terps upset No. 8 North Carolina 13-6 -- thanks to two goals by Scott Larue, who coming into the contest had netted just one goal all season.

Here's the updated NCAA Lacrosse Bracket:

  • Virginia 13, Cornell 9
  • Denver 14, Johns Hopkins 9
  • Maryland 6, Syracuse 5 (OT)
  • (4) Notre Dame vs. (5) Duke — Sunday at Gillette Stadium (2:30 p.m on ESPNU).
