Preakness Stakes 2011: Shackleford Outruns Animal Kingdom

Shackleford held off a hard-charging Animal Kingdom to win the 136th running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. Shackleford's victory denied Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom a chance to race for the Triple Crown, and denied the Belmont Stakes a shot at a historic race. No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.

Shackleford, with jockey Jesus Castanon aboard, went wire-to-wire for the victory. Animal Kingdom charged from near the back of the pack down the final stretch, but came up about three-quarters of a length short of a shot at history.
