Steele Stanwick netted three goals and dished out four assists Saturday afternoon to help the No. 7-seeded Virginia Cavaliers upset No. 2 Cornell Big Red, 13-9, in a NCAA Men's Lacrosse quarterfinal contest at Hofstra's James H. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. Chris Bucklet also tallied a hat trick for the Cavaliers (11-5), who will play the winner of No. 3 Johns Hopkins and No. 6 Denver. The semifinal match up will be played next Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.
Junior Rob Pannell scored three goals for Cornell, who jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage. However, Virginia used a nine-goal run at the end of the first half to take a 10-4 lead into the locker room. Cornell (14-3) outscored Virginia 3-1 in the third quarter to pull within 11-7, but did not get any closer. Sophomore Steve Mock tallied a game-best four goals for the Big Red, who failed to reach their third straight Final Four.
