With all the emphasis currently in football, and other sports, on preventing and treating concussions I have often wondered why more time and effort was not put into studying and improving the one piece of equipment that could best help prevent concussions -- the football helmet.
↵Well, Virginia Tech Tuesday released a study ranking football helmets. Using a five-star rating system only one helmet received the top five-star safety rating. Per the Virginia Tech study the Riddell Revolution Speed is the best anti-concussion helmet currently on the market. Here are the complete results of the study.
↵↵↵"The results clearly show that the newer technologies across all manufacturers are significantly better at reducing the risk of concussions compared to the older models," said project director Stefan Duma, in a news release.
↵
Riddell, of course, issued a statement touting the benefits of the helmet.
↵↵↵"It is our hope that based on this and other independent research, that players and teams at all levels will continue to migrate to the Revolution family of helmets,” Riddell sports president Dan Arment said in a statement e-mailed to the Associated Press.
