Butler held off a furious Wisconsin rally Thursday night to win, 61-54, advancing to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Elite Eight. Butler was national runner-up a year ago, losing to Duke in the NCAA title game.
Butler (26-9), the No. 8 seed, held Wisconsin (25-9) to 30 percent shooting and limited the Badgers leading scorer Jon Leuer to three points.Wisconsin missed a staggering 16 consecutive shots at one point during the game.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 20 points in the second half, but Wisconsin rallied late to make the game close. The Badgers got within four points, 53-49, with 1:38 remaining, but could get no closer.
Matt Howard scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Butler, and Shelvin Mack added 13 points. Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor led all scorers with 22 points.
Butler will face Florida with a trip to the Final Four on the line on Saturday.
