St. John's proved to be no match for top-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Monday night, falling 75-49 in second-round action. St. John's, the ninth seed, kept the game close at halftime, trailing only 38-30. Stanford (31-2) outscored St. John's (22-11) by a substantial 37-19 margin in the second half, however.
In the day's major upset, 11th-seeded Gonzaga defeated UCLA, 89-75. Gonzaga's Courtney Vandersloot had 29 points, 17 assists, seven rebounds and five steals to lead the upset.
Today, Rutgers, seeded seventh in the Dallas Region, takes on second-seeded Texas A&M (ESPN2, 9:40 p.m.). A pair of top seeds are also in action. Connecticut, No. 1 seed in the Philadelphia Region, takes on No. 9 Purdue (ESPN2, 7:05 p.m.) and Baylor, No. 1 in the Dallas Region, faces ninth-seeded West Virginia (ESPN2, 9:45 p.m.).
