Queens, NY (Sports Network) – Moe Harkless poured in 32 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as St. John’s routed Providence, 91-67, in the Big East opener for both teams.
D’Angelo Harrison tallied 25 points to go with seven assists, and Phil Greene scored 12 for the Red Storm (7-5, 1-0 Big East), who have won three in a row heading to a Saturday game at ninth-ranked Connecticut.
Gerard Coleman had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Friars (11-3, 0-1), who had a seven-game winning streak stopped. LaDontae Henton added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Vincent Council scored 11 to go with four assists, but committed seven of his team’s 20 turnovers.
A jumper by God’sgift Achiuwa expanded the lead for the Red Storm to 16-4 lead less than seven minutes into the game. St. John’s led by as many as 19 in the first half before settling for a 47-31 cushion after the first 20 minutes.
The double-digit difference remained throughout the second half.
