With all of the crazy upsets at the top of the college football rankings, and the shuffling that will cause in the BCS standings, what Rutgers University did Saturday might have gone unnoticed on the national college football landscape. It should not have, however.
Rutgers' 20-3 thrashing of Cincinnati at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway put the Scarlet Knights into a tie with Louisville atop the Big East Conference standings. Rutgers, 4-2 in the conference and 8-3 overall, is now firmly in the hunt for the Big East's automatic bid to this year's Orange Bowl. The Big East, of course, is like the unwanted step-child of the BCS and the thought of having the unheralded Scarlet Knights in their game cannot be thrilling to Orange Bowl organizers.
Rutgers is technically behind the 6-5 Louisville Cardinals due to a 16-14 loss to Louisville earlier this season. SB Nation put the Big East BCS picture into perspective.
Big East: Must we do this every week? How could we not? The team leading the conference now is 6-5 Louisville, with every Big East team having at least three losses already. The Orange Bowl is not relishing the thought of getting another deadbeat "champion" out of this bunch.
Still, like it or not, when the BCS Rankings, AP Top 25 poll and USA Today Coaches Poll come out later today Rutgers is likely to make some noise.
