Big East Football: Saturday Roundup

The Big East Conference football programs continued to struggle Saturday as the league went 1-1 in non-conference contests, and its in-conference games were not pretty -- at least, for some teams. Didn't catch it all? No worries, here's your Sunday morning Big East round up for Week 6.

West Virginia 43, Connecticut 16

For 24 minutes it seemed as if the University of Connecticut had found a formula to slow down the fast-moving West Virginia University offense. However, WVU, which led 10-9 at halftime, scored 33-unanswered, second-half points to rout UConn (4-1, 0-1 Big East).

Junior quarterback Geno Smith tallied all four of his passing touchdowns in the second half, while sophomore wide receivers Stedman Bailey (178) and Ivan McCartney (131) each reached the 100-yard receiving mark. Bailey finished with two TDs, including a 84-yarder that helped the Mountaineers (5-1, 1-1) take a 24-9, early third-quarter lead.

North Carolina 14, Louisville 7

The University of Louisville held the University of North Carolina to just 62 yards in the first half, but UNC (5-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) was able to collect second-half touchdowns from freshman running back Giovani Bernard and senior wide receiver Dwight Jones to pull out the win.

Louisville's lone score game with just 42 seconds remaining in the game when freshman quarterback Teddy Bridgewater connected with sophomore quarterback Dominique Brown on a 18-yard TD reception. Bridgewater finished the game 19-of-30 for 174 yards.

Louisville drops to 2-3 on the season.
