The New Jersey Devils placed defenseman Anssi Salmela on waivers today.
General manager Lou Lamoriello told the media that Salmela will not play regularly, and the waiver move will allow other teams to acquire the defenseman.
Salmela has struggled since returning to the lineup last month. In 11 games, the Devils' defenseman has no goals and one assist. He averaged 14:06 of ice time.
The Devils re-acquired Salmela in last year's trade for Ilya Kovalchuk. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent on May 30, 2008. The Devils traded Salmela to the Atlanta Thrashers in a deal for Niclas Havlid and Myles Stoez on March 2, 2009.
