Morning Coffee! The Preliminaries Are Over

Good morning, New York sports fans. Here is your first look at the local sports scene this morning.

  • The NFL preliminaries are over for the New York Giants and New York Jets. The Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 20-17, Thursday night while the Jets topped the Philadelphia Eagles, 21-17. Now, we wait to see how each team sets its 53-man roster. It's nervous time for 'bubble' players all across the NFL.

  • CC Sabathia became the first 19-game winner in the majors this season as the Yankees blanked Oakland, 5-0. Losing pitcher Dallas Braden took a poke at the usually vociferous Yankee Stadium fans, saying he was disappointed they did not heckle him with more fervor. Braden, of course, had the 'get off my mound' run-in with Alex Rodriguez earlier this season.

  • The New York Mets avoided a four-game sweep Thursday night, topping Atlanta, 4-2.  Ho hum. When do the Mets fire Jerry Manuel?

  • Rutgers opened its season with a 31-0 victory over Norfolk State. The score sounds nice, but the Scarlet Knights were apparently not very impressive.
