Morning Coffee: Johan and CC Dominate More Than Subway Ads

All quiet on the football and Kovy fronts, so just the boys of summer. Let's recap, Marge:

  • The Mets got an absolute gem from Johan Santana and managed to not spoil it, giving the ace his ninth victory of the season in a 1-0 whitewashing of Philadelphia to even their three-game series at one. New York's only run came on an opposite-field Jeff Francoeur home run in the top of the seventh. Francoeur later swung at a mile high fastball with a 3-2 count and the bases loaded in the eighth. Frenchy giveth, and Frenchy taketh away. Johan had a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth, struck out the third hitter, but the ball got away from Henry Blanco and the batter advanced to first. The next hitter broke the no-no. This is what it's like to be a Mets fan.

  • After a bizarre injury to Alex Rodriguez (Check my column for more) the Yankees rebounded to beat the Red Sox, 5-2. The Yanks were able to string together hits rather than use the longball, and A-Rod's replacement Ramiro Pena was the only Yankee with a 2-RBI game. Sabathia gave up only six hits over eight innings to win his 14th game of the season.
