Morning Coffee! Good News For People Who Love Bad News

Not a banner day, really. Let's recap:

  • While it is clear that the Yanks as a team are going through a bit of a slump, AJ Burnett remains inconsistent for the Pinstripes. The star pitcher had a poor first inning and couldn't get out of the fourth this evening, as the White Sox trampled the Bombers 9-4 on the South Side Friday. The Sox scored four in the first and fourth, knocking Burnett down to 9-12, with a 5.17 ERA. Nick Swisher hit a ninth inning homer in defeat for New York. Pinstripe Alley with more.

  • The Devils/Ilya Kovalchuk saga rolls on and on and on. While a report earlier stated that the NHL was expected to accept the most recent contract submitted by the Devs, more recent reports have backed off, saying that while the Devils have gotten rid of some of the league's concerns, and they have a good shot at getting the deal through, it is not yet a mere formality. I totally thought this'd be over to me, a fitting exclamation point on a story that nearly destroyed my summer. But we move on, as the league has five days - not business days, real ones - to decide. In Lou We Trust is less melancholy. For more on the Devils and owner Jeff Vanderbeek, check out my Sunday column tomorrow.

  • The Jets continue to play strange, dull pre-season games, losing to the Redskins 16-11 at the New Joint. They at least were able to score a TD this evening, Mark Sanchez threw a TD pass to Dustin Keller. Also positive: Ladanian Tomlinson running for 86 yards. Shonn Greene added 56 on the ground. However, a turnover led to a late Skins TD and another gave them the ball to melt it away for good. Oh, and Calvin Pace will miss a few weeks.  Gang Green Nation with more.
