Struggling veteran right-hander Javier Vazquez is being moved to the bullpen by the New York Yankees, meaning young right-hander Ivan Nova will remain in the rotation.
Vazquez was among the top pitchers in the National League last season, but has struggled this year. He’s 9-9 with a 5.05 ERA in 23 starts and has not won in five outings.
“I’m disappointed, obviously,” Vazquez said. “But I’m also not doing my job so I understand, of course.”
The Yankees brought Vazquez in during the offseason hoping he could be their No. 4 starter, and give them a four-man rotation in the playoffs. As it stands right now, Vazquez would be a longshot to even make the team’s postseason roster.
