Morning Coffee: A-Rod Out, Animal In

Last night in New York sports, a quiet one before a very loud one tomorrow:

  • The Mets somehow turned in an impressive offensive performance. Of course, it was against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but an effort is an effort! Seven runs and 15 hits, including a Chris Carter homer, propelled the Mets back to .500 with a 7-2 win in the Steel City. Mike Pelfrey won his 12th game. Remember when we thought he'd have 12 wins before the All-Star break? That was fun. Amazin' Avenue has fun too.

  • AJ Burnett had another poor outing, giving up six runs on 12 hits in seven innings to lose his 11th game of the year, as the Bombers were shut out, 6-0. Felix Hernandez struck out 11 and gave up only four hits in eight shutout innings. Alex Rodriguez was pulled early in what was his first game back from injury. The Rays also lost in Oakland, so they'll remain one game back in the AL East. Pinstripe Alley recaps.
