Morning Coffee! Pelfrey Needs A New Plan

Good morning, New York sports fans. Here is today's first look at what is going on around the New York sports scene.

  • Mike Pelfrey had the shortest start of his career Monday night in a 13-2 loss to Arizona. New York Mets brass doesn't think anything is wrong with their ace right-hander, except that he needs to throw his fastball more often.

  • The New York Yankees begin a West coast trip in Anaheim tonight. Alex Rodriguez will begin the night with 598 career home runs, just two shy of becoming the seventh player in baseball history to hit 600 homers.

  • Jon Weber, a veteran minor league outfielder who began the season at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre in the Yankee farm system, retired suddenly a few days ago. Now we know why. Weber was just hit with a 100-game suspension after a third positive drug test in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Well, that's one way to avoid being suspended.

  • Goal.com is reporting that Hank Steinbrenner wants a new toy. Seems Hank has his eye on buying the Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. As a Yankee fan I say do whatever you want, Hank. If it keeps you out of the hair of GM Brian Cashman and your brother Hal in running the Yankees, you go right ahead and buy a soccer team. Buy anything you want, for that matter. Just leave the Yankees alone.

  • Boston Celtics' GM Danny Ainge said "It's great to have Nate" after former New York Knick Nate Robinsore-signed with the team on Monday. I wonder if fans of either team would have predicted that a few months ago.
