Morning Coffee! R.A. Dickey Must Be Dreaming

Remember Aaron Small? He was the pitcher who came to the New York Yankees in 2005 having won just 16 games in an eight-year big-league career, then had a magical 10-0 season to help the Yankees reach the playoffs.

Well, R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets is having a similarly improbable season. The 35-year-old knuckleballer improved to 6-0 with eight shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Detroit Wednesday night. Dickey entered the season with a 22-28 career record in seven seasons, and the journeyman right-hander had just seven victories in the last four seasons combined.

This season is showing signs of turning into an improbably successful one for the Mets. And it is being led from an incredibly improbable source. Amazin' Avenue

The Yankees escaped the desert with a 6-5 10-inning victory Wednesday night, and now lead the American League East by 2.5 games. Mariano Rivera wriggled out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the 10th inning . If you watched the game you could not help but feel sorry for Arizona starter Dontrelle Willis, who walked seven in 2.1 innings. Willis is going through the Steve Blass/Mark Wohlers/Rick Ankiel deal where he has no clue where the ball will go when he throws it. It is painful to watch. Pinstripe Alley
