Amani Toomer was at New Meadowlands Stadium Wednesday to promote his entry into the Nov. 7 New York City Marathon.
The former New York Giants' wide receiver, who retired a year ago after a distinguished 13-year career, will be running to benefit the New York Road Runner's Youth Program. Toomer will be starting last in the marathon and his sponsor, TIMEX, will donate $1 to the program for every runner Amani passes.
↵↵"Sometimes when players get done there's no goal, there's no purpose to what they're doing," Toomer said. "So now I'm getting into broadcasting but I have a physical goal which is to stay in shape and finish this marathon."
↵
Toomer has never done anything like this, and TIMEX is equipping Toomer with a Timex Ironman Global Trainer, a GPS-enabled training tool that tracks pace, distance and heart rate data.
↵He has also enlisted Chris Thomas, 2009 USAT Amateur Triathlete of the Year, to help him train.
↵It will be interesting to see just how far Amani makes it during the race. Good luck, No. 81.
