St. John's 81, West Virginia 71: Red Storm Dominate In Conference Opener

The St. John's Red Storm wrote the book on how to start Big East Conference play on Wednesday night.

Using senior forwards D.J. Kennedy and Justin Brownlee 17-points performances, the St. John's Red Storm defeat host West Virginia Mountaineers, 81-71, in both squads Big East opener.

Kennedy added a team-best 11 rebounds and six assists. Teammate Dwight Hardy netted a team-best 20 points, which included going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the games' final 1:30.

St. John's (8-3, 1-0 Big East) dominated from the floor, shooting above 60 percent from the field, which included just one 3-point shot, and went 30 of 39 from the free-throw line.

West Virginia's Kevin Jones had a team-best 14 points.

On Saturday, St. John's travels to the Providence Friars (11-3, 0-1), which lost to but played with No. 5 Syracuse Orange Tuesday.
