According to Tom Gluttie from FIre and Ice the New Jersey Devils will miss Brian Rolston for the next 4-6 weeks. From Tom:
Devils left wing Brian Rolston will have surgery Thursday morning in Philadelphia to repair a sports hernia, general manager Lou Lamoriello said this afternoon.
Lamoriello said Rolston will miss four to six weeks and be placed on long-term injured reserve beginning today. That will allow the team to go over the salary cap by the amount of Rolston's cap hit ($5,062,500) and fill out its roster to dress the full 20 players for Friday's home game against Colorado, but the team will still dress only 16 skaters for tonight's game in Buffalo.
This news isn't all bad, since it gives the Devils $5 million in cap space until Rolston returns. John from In Lou We Trust has more on that situation:
Rolston will need surgery for a sports hernia. He will be out for 4-6 weeks and will go on long term injured reserve. The Devils will still play with 16 tonight, but will make roster decisions tomorrow.
Yes, this only buys the Devils time, but Rolston on LTIR will free up more than enough space to replace all of the missing spots on the roster and give them a long time before having to make a permanent move.
So this isn't bad, but it's certainly not great. More when it happens.
