Junior forward James Southerland came off the bench Tuesday to net a game-best 19 points to help the Syracuse University men's basketball team earn a decisive 84-46 victory over visiting Eastern Michigan in front of 16,649 fans at the Carrier Dome. Junior guard Brandon Triche added 12 points, while senior forward Kris Joseph chipped in with 11 for the Orange (7-0), who are ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll and No. 4 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.
Leading 32-24 at halftime, SU used a 24-11 run, aided by two 3-pointers from Triche, to take a 56-35 lead with 10:18 to go in the game. The Orange busted the game wide open with a 24-8 run, which included eight points from Southerland, to take an 80-43 lead with 2:53 remaining.
In the first half, the Eagles held a 21-18 advantage with 7:44 to go, but the Orange used a 10-1 run to help take a eight-point halftime advantage
SU's solid victory was a nice primer for Friday's contest against nationally-ranked the University of Florida (No. 10/9), who visits the Carrier Dome in a much anticipated non-conference contest (7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN). The Gators (5-1) only loss on the season came against the No. 2 team in the country, Ohio State University, 81-74, Nov. 15.
