Senior forward Kris Joseph netted a game-best 16 points to help the Syracuse University men's basketball team earn a season-opening victory, 78-53, over Fordham University in a non-conference game played in front of 22,906 fans at the Carrier Dome. The game's end result helped the Orange (1-0), ranked No. 5 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, begin its eighth straight year with a season-opening victory.
Sophomore guard Dion Waiters netted 14 points off the bench for the Orange (1-0), while senior starting point guard Scoop Jardine tallied seven points, three assists and steals. Junior guard Brandon Triche added nine points and seven rebounds. Freshman center Fab Melo finished with four points and four blocked shots.
Meanwhile, Fordham was led by senior forward Chris Gatson, who chalked up 13 points and collected five rebounds, while freshman guard Bryan Smith added 13 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Brandon Frazier chipped in with nine points and three steals.
