Rutgers National Signing Day: OL Kaleb Johnson Picks Scarlet Knights

According to Scout.com, the Rutgers football program has snagged three-star offensive lineman Kaleb Johnson from Jacksonville, FL. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman was also considering the Miami Hurricanes, North Carolina Tarheels and Louisville Cardinals.

"It was just my relationship with the coaches," Johnson told Scout.com on Wednesday. "They were the first to offer me, and I’ve had a strong relationship over the years with them. There were also a lot of (committed players) calling me and talking to me, and that helped."

"They talked about guard and and they said I may be able to play tackle," Johnson said. "When I asked coach (Greg) Schiano which position he wanted me to play, he said he didn't say a specific one. He said I could play wherever I did my best."

Earlier in the morning, another offensive lineman Keith Lumpkin, a 6-foot-8, 295-pounder from St. Peter's Prep in New Jersey City, officially commited to Rutgers. Lumpkin had verbally committed to RU in September.

"I chose tonight to commit to Rutgers because I felt it would be a good time with them going away this weekend (to play at FIU) and to get this off my plate before our season starts," Lumpkin told the Star-Ledger.

New Jersey's No. 1 recruiting prospect, running back Savon Huggins verbally committed to Rutgers over the weekend.

"Huggins, ranked the No.4 running back in the nation by ESPN," wrote Matt Canvisser of TheAlternativePress.com. "(Was) named an Under Armor All-American and is ranked No.28 on the ESPNU 150 list of the top football prospects. As a senior at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, Huggins ran for 1,891 yards and 35 touchdowns en route to being named the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year."

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano will hold a news conference at 3:30 p.m. on SNY. SB Nation New York will continue to list Scarlet Knights commitments as signing day continues.
