The Rutgers University basketball program will try to stay above .500 Wednesday night as the Scarlet Knights host Princeton University in a non-conference game (7:30 p.m.) at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway, NJ. Rutgers (4-4) has dropped three of its last four games, including a close 55-50 loss to Louisiana State University last Saturday. Meanwhile, the Tigers (3-5) are trying to earn their second consecutive victory in this historic rivalry that features 117 previous meeting between the two programs.
On Saturday, the Mike Rice led Scarlet Knights held the lead for most of the game against LSU, but was outscored 12-2 in the final 4:49 to lose by five points. Guard Elie Carter netted a team-best 10 points in the loss. Sophomore forward Gilvydas Biruta enters Wednesday's showdown as Rutgers' leading scoring (11.6 points per game) and rebounder (6.0 rebounds per game).
As for Princeton, which is coming off a 69-54 victory over Lafayette Leopards last Wednesday, its one of the favorites to win the Ivy League this season. Junior forward Ian Hummer, who netted 23 points in the victory, leads the Tigers in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.3). In last season's victory over Rutgers, Hummer netted 17 points.
The other Tiger player to look out for is senior guard Douglas Davis who averages 12.1 ppg.
