David Wright Injury: Third Baseman Returns To Mets Lineup

New York Mets third baseman David Wright suffered a broken pinkie during Tuesday's game and there was speculation that Wright would have to make a trip to the disabled list.

Four days later, Wright is in the Mets starting lineup and batting third against the Philadelphia Phillies.

David Wright is in the lineup and hitting third.

— New York Mets (@Mets) April 14, 2012

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a scorching start to the 2012 season. In 17 plate appearances Wright is batting .545, with one home run and four RBIs for the 5-2 Mets.

Wright is coming off the worst season of his career, in which he tied a career low in home runs with 14 and hit only .254. His low BABIP of .302 – 39 points below his career average – suggests Wright was the victim of bad luck in 2011.

David Wright Injury Update: Long-Term Contract Situation In Balance As Wright Deals With Latest Injury

The New York Mets believe David Wright's talent is worthy of a contract extension, but have not begun negotiations with the third baseman partially because they are worried about his tendency to get injured, according to the New York Daily News.

Wright, whose contract expires after 2013 with a team option, has suffered a number of injuries lately that have the Mets pondering whether he deserves a long-term, big-money deal. His latest injury, a broken finger, comes in the wake of last season's fractured back and a muscle strain that affected him during spring training.

The Daily News reports that the organization is high on everything Wright can provide, and would love to keep him around if he shows the injuries are an aberration rather than a pattern. But first the 29-year old has to return from his broken pinkie finger and show the ability to stay healthy.

David Wright Injury Update: Wright Has a Broken Right Pinkie

Just when it all looked so promising for the New York Mets, this happens.

During Tuesday night's game, the Mets made an announcement that third baseman David Wright sustained a broken right pinkie on the middle joint.

Wright apparently injured himself diving back into first base on a pick-off attempt Monday night against Washington. At first it was only thought to be a jammed finger, but x-rays revealed a slight fracture.

For now, Wright has been put in a splint and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday for further results. A presumed timetable can be expected Friday, after a hand specialist can look at the x-ray results, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.com.

Manager Terry Collins hasn't made any declarations yet whether or not Wright will have to go on the DL, or if he can play through the pain while it heals.

Wright says that while he doesn't want to go on the DL, he realizes it may be inevitable if he has to sit for a little bit.

"If I can't play sooner rather than later, I understand. They can't go and be down a man for 10 days or so," Wright said about the DL. "I want to get out there and play as soon as possible. I guess, ultimately, it's not my call, because if I'm not available and still on the roster, we're down a man. ... Obviously, I don't want to go on the DL. No one ever wants to go on the DL. But sometimes it just works out that way. Hopefully, that's not the case this time."

For now, the Mets and Wright play the waiting game.
