Yankees Vs. Angels Final Score: New York's Comeback Falls Short In 10-8 Loss

The New York Yankees were defeated by the Los Angeles Angels, 10-8, on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. The win by the Angels prevented a Yankees sweep in the three-game set between the teams. The Yankees had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning, but Angels closer Kevin Jepsen got Alex Rodriguez to pop out to end the game.

"What an awesome situation to come up in," Rodriguez said after the game. "Just came up a little short."

The Angels got on the board first when Erick Aybar and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back solo homers in the top of the first inning. An Alex Rodriguez two-run shot tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. New York took their first lead on a Derek Jeter RBI single. A sacrifice fly and two run homer from Maicer Izturis gave the Angels a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Curtis Granderson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one.

Pujols hit into a double play in the seventh inning but Los Angeles was able to score a run on the play. An Eric Chavez home run made it 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh. The Angels added three more runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth to push their lead to 10-5. The Yankees used a two-run homer from Mark Teixeira and a walk by Curtis Granderson to cut the lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't tie the game.

Ivan Nova (10-4, 4.18 ERA) started on the mound for the Yankees and went six innings in the loss, giving up nine hits (three homers), six earned runs and two walks. Nova only struck out three batters. Chad Qualls came on in relief of Nova but gave up three more runs (all earned) on four hits. Jered Weaver (11-1, 2.26 ERA) was the starter for the Angels in the win. He gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in seven innings.

Robinson Cano extended his hitting streak to 18 games in the loss. Cano's single in the first inning extended the streak. He finished the game 2-3 at the plate.

The Yankees (54-34) will begin their next series on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays (45-44) at Yankee Stadium.
