Joba Chamberlain Injury Update: Chamberlain Begins Rehab Assignment, Reaches 97 MPH

New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain made his first appearance in 13 months for the team's rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate on Tuesday.

The 26-year old threw 23 pitches to complete one inning while allowing no hits, no earned runs and no walks. Returning after 2011 Tommy John surgery and a fluke dislocated right ankle this summer, Chamberlain reached 97 MPH on the radar gun and struck out two batters. He did allow an unearned run.

"Just to feel comfortable and just to be in a game, I mean, really was the biggest thing," the 26-year-old told Newsday after his appearance. "So I was very pleased."

The Yankees, seven games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East standings, return to the field after the All-Star break on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.
