Chad Qualls Traded To Yankees: New York Acquires Veteran Reliever From Phillies

The New York Yankees made a move Sunday to improve their pitching depth, as they acquired veteran reliever Chad Qualls from the Philadelphia Phillies for either cash or a player to be named later. The news was first reported by New York Post writer Mark Hale.

Qualls, 33, is a former closer for the Arizona Diamondbacks and served as a setup man for Phillies' closer Jonathan Papelbon. The nine-year veteran spent last season with the San Diego Padres where he finished the season with a 3.35 ERA and a 6-8 record.

There's speculation that Qualls will replace Cory Wade in the Yankees bullpen, which has needed to carry a heavy load as New York's starting rotation has been beaten up by the injury bug.

Yankees-White Sox Final Score: Yankees Shut Out White Sox, 4-0

After losing the first two games of their four-game series with the Chicago white Sox, the New York Yankees called on Hiroki Kuroda to stop the bleeding Saturday. That he did, pitching the team to a 4-0 victory over Chicago.

Kuroda (8-7, 3.17 ERA) didn't disappoint one bit. The 37-year-old came up big with his best performance of the year, striking out a season-high 11 batters while blanking Chicago over seven innings.

Kuroda has a 1.65 ERA over his last seven starts.

"I think I've been really aggressive lately," said Kuroda, who spent his first four seasons in the National League, with the Dodgers. "Earlier in the season, I was facing a lot of hitters that I hadn't faced before, so I tried to be careful to hit those corners and I got behind in the count many times. Now, I try to be as aggressive as possible."

The offense wasn't overwhelming, but they got the job done against Jake Peavy (6-5, 2.96 ERA). The Yankees (47-30) got to Peavy early, scoring a run each in the first and second inning.

As usual, the Bombers lived up to their nickname with three home runs, courtesy of Curtis Granderson (23), DeWayne Wise (2) and Robinson Cano (19). All were of the solo variety.

Wise went 3-for-3 including his homer and two RBI.

The White Sox (42-36) could only muster three hits throughout the afternoon.

New York will send Phil Hughes to the mound looking to make it two in a row on Sunday against Gavin Floyd.

Yankees Vs. White Sox: Derek Jeter Passes Cal Ripken On All-Time Hits List

Derek Jeter's leadoff double against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night moved him into 13th place on the all time hits list, ESPN reports. Jeter passed Ripken with his 97th hit of the 2012 season and his 3,185th career hit. Nap Lajoie, with 3.252 career hits, is now the man in front of Jeter on the list.

Cal Ripken, the previous holder of the 13th spot on the list, released a statement:

"Derek has been such a special player for such a long time and I am happy to see him continue to play at a high level," Ripken said. "He represents the game and the Yankees wonderfully, and I hope that he continues to play and continues to give all of us baseball fans great memories."

With another year to play and a player option for 2014, Jeter will have plenty of opportunity to provide more of those memories and move farther up in the record books.

Yankees (46-29) Vs. White Sox (41-35) Preview: Game time, TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers

The New York Yankees look to hop back on the winning trail when they continue a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. (Game Time: 7:05 p.m., TV Schedule: YES)

The Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead on Thursday night during the series opener, but David Robertson surrendered a three-run home run to Dayan Viciedo and the White Sox escaped with a 4-3 victory. New York's ninth-inning collapse spoiled a strong start from Ivan Nova, who allowed just one earned run and six hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Adam Warren, a 24-year-old right-hander who was 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 starts this year for Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre, will make his Major League debut for the Yankees on Friday. The White Sox will counter with rookie Jose Quintana, who enters the game with a 16-inning scoreless streak.

Yankees Vs. White Sox Final Score: David Robertson Gives Up 3-Run Homer In 9th, New York Loses 4-3

The New York Yankees lost the opener of their four-game series against the Chicago Whites Sox, 4-3, Thursday night at Yankee Stadium. David Robertson (0-2) gave up a three-run home run in the ninth inning to Dayan Viciedo, spoiling Ivan Nova's solid night on the mound.

The Yankees held a 3-1 lead entering the ninth. Cody Eppley started the inning on the mound, but was relieved by Clay Rapada after giving up a single to the first batter he faced, Alex Rios. Rapada faced A.J. Pierzynski on the next at-bat, and threw what could have been a double play ball into center field. Instead of two outs, the Yankees had none and the White Sox had runners on the corners.

Rapada was promptly relieved by Robertson, who gave up a home run on the next at-bat. Robertson was able to down the next straight batters, but by then the damage was done. Derek Jeter's fly ball was caught at the wall to end the game in the bottom of the inning with DeWayne Wise stuck on first.

Nova gave up just one earned run off six hits and three walks, while striking out five in 7 1/3 innings. He allowed a homer to Alejandro De Aza in the fifth inning that briefly put the White Sox up 1-0 for his only earned run of the night. De Aza went 4-for-5 at the plate.

The Yankees responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring on back-to-back doubles by Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano to take a 2-1 lead off Chicago starter Dylan Axelrod. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Mark Teixeira hit his 13th home run of the season in the eighth inning. The solo shot gave the Yankees a comfortable 3-1 lead provided the bull pen did its job.

Hector Santiago (2-1) was given the win despite giving up the Teixeira home run in one inning of relief. Addison Reed earned his 11th save of the season.
