Yankees Vs. Nationals Final Score: New York Sweeps Series With 4-1 Win On Sunday

The New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals, 4-1, at Nationals Park on Sunday. The win gave the Yanks a sweep of the three-game series.

Ivan Nova (9-2, 4.32 ERA) started for the Yankees and went 7-2/3 innings. Nova allowed seven hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out four batters. Edwin Jackson (3-4, 3.02 ERA) went six innings for the Nationals and gave up seven hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out only one batter. Rafael Soriano picked up his 13th save for New York for pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The win was the ninth in a row for the Yankees, who are 40-25 and lead the Baltimore Orioles by 1.5 games in the American League East. New York's win streak is its longest since a nine-game run from May 13-21, 2009.

A Mark Teixeira sacrifice fly gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Teixeira led the Yankee offense with three hits. Adam LaRoche's solo homer in the second inning was it for the Nationals scoring wise. Curtis Granderson gave the lead back to New York with a solo shot in the fifth inning, his team-leading 21st of the season. Robinson Cano pushed the lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the seventh inning, his 12th of the year. The other Yankees run also came in the seventh inning when Andruw Jones walked on a ball four passed ball and Teixeira scored from third. Granderson, Cano and catcher Chris Stewart all had two hits for the Yankees.

The Yankees return home Monday to begin a series against the Atlanta Braves (35-31) at Yankee Stadium.
