Yankees-Nationals Final Score: New York Defeats Washington 7-2 In Game 1

The New York Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals 7-2 Friday night, winning the opening game of a three-game series between the division leaders. Phil Hughes showed more of his recent good form, giving the Yankees six solid innings. He gave up six hits but only one run while striking out nine.

The Yankee offense started in the third with Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher each hitting RBI singles, putting the Yankees up 2-0. The Nationals answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Michael Morse, but that was all they would get after Hughes got Ian Desmond to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Yankees added four runs in the seveth inning when Derek Jeter picked up an RBI on an infield single with the bases loaded. A throwing error by Desmond allowed another run to score, and with two on Curtis Granderson doubled to deep left to add another two runs. Granderson also had a solo home run in the ninth, making him 2-for-5 on the night with three RBI.

Cody Eppley, Clay Rapada and David Robertson handled relief for the Yankees, with only Robertson giving up any offense. Making his return from spending more than a month on the disabled list with an oblique injuey, Robertson gave up two hits and a run to the Nationals, but by then the game was well in hand. With the win the Yankees improve to 38-25. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET on Saturday.
