Cervelli has spent the past three seasons as the Yankees backup catcher. He was not having a great spring but did hit a 2-run homer in the Yankees' 8-3 win against the Mets in Wednesday's Spring Training game. The Yankees optioned Cervelli to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after acquiring catcher Chris Stewart from the Giants in exchange for right-handed pitcher George Kontos.
Cervelli said about the demotion:
"It's not my decision, and that's it," Cervelli said. "I'm disappointed with this, but that's never going to change anything. All my life, I've had to do things, and I've had to do it double, triple. If they want me to prove that I can catch in the big leagues, I'll go and prove it, that I have to be here." (via Yankees)
Stewart has hit just .200 with 3 home runs and 13 RBI in 210 MLB at-bats (93 games).
