Yankees Vs. Twins Final Score: Curtis Granderson Goes 5-for-5 With 3 Home Runs In 7-6 Yankees Win

Curtis Granderson hit three home runs by the fifth inning of Thursday's 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins. He needed just three at-bats to put himself on the edge of history. With one more dinger he would have joined Lou Gehrig as the only New York Yankees to have hit four homers in a single game. Instead he hit two more singles, settling for a 5-for-5 performance instead.

Phil Hughes earned the win on the mound, though he still looked shaky in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up six runs, two earned, and six hits. Anthony Swarzak was obviously much worse for the Twins, however, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings.

Mark Texeira also homered Thursday, taking Swarzak deep in the first inning to also score Alex Rodriguez. Texeira and Ramirez finished 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 on the night.

Curtis Granderson Hits Three Home Runs In Three At-Bats Thursday Night

Curtis Granderson put himself on the cusp of history Thursday night, hitting three home runs in his first three plate appearances against the Minnesota Twins. The feat is a rare one indeed. Only 27 New York Yankees players, including Granderson, have ever hit three homers in a game. Just one, Lou Gehrig, has ever hit four.

You can check out the third dinger here, courtesy of MLB.com. Unfortunately, on his next at-bat he only hit a single. The game is now in the top of the seventh, with the Yankees leading 7-6. Should New York keep up its torrent pace at the plate, Granderson could get another shot at history.

The Yankees have 10 hits as a team on the night, eight of them coming off of Twins starter Anthony Swarzak.

Nelson Figueroa Signs Minor League Contract With New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have signed Nelson Figueroa to a minor league contract, the pitcher revealed on Thursday when he posted a picture of his new contract on Facebook.

Figueroa, 37, appeared in eight games last season with the Houston Astros, including five starts, and racked up an 0-3 record with an 8.69 ERA. The journeyman has pitched for six teams in his nine-year career, accumulating a career 20-35 record to go along with a 4.55 ERA. One of his biggest assets has always been versatility, as he can start or come out of the bullpen equally well.

The problem is that it's unclear whether he has any life left in his right arm. He began the season in the Toronto Blue Jays system but has yet to appear in a game this season.

Brett Gardner Injury Update: Yankees Place Outfielder On 15-Day Disabled List

New York Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with both a bruised left elbow and strained arm muscle.

The injury was suffered on Tuesday night during the Yankees' win over the Twins, although Gardner did take batting practice prior to Wednesday's game.

The Yankees have several options to take Gardner's place in the outfield, including Raul Ibanez, Andrew Jones, and Eduardo Nunez. To replace him on the 25-man roster, the Yankees recalled pitcher Cody Eppler, a right-handed reliever.

The 28-year old Gardner has fared well at the plate so far this season, batting .321 and posting a .424 on-base percentage, while also continuing his strong work in the outfield.

The Yankees will face the Twins on Thursday night in the final game of a four-game set.

Yankees Vs. Twins, Game 4 Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Pitching Matchup And More

In the final tilt of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins four game series, Phil Hughes will oppose Anthony Swarzak on the mound, seeking his first win for the Pinstripes in this young 2012 season.

Hughes has been chased early in each of his two starts this year, lasting just three and one-third innings his last time out in a 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The 25-year old pitched well throughout spring training, giving hope to the Yankees that he could move past his forgettable 2011, during which he posted a 5.79 ERA. He hasn't yet, and Thursday night will be another critical outing for his future as it relates to staying in the Yankees' rotation.

Like Hughes, Swarzak has yet to record a win in 2012, but that has just as much to do with run support (Minnesota has combined for two runs in his two start) as has how he has pitched (he's allowed just five runs in 12 innings).

Derek Jeter continued his sharp start to the 2012 season on Wednesday night, stroking another home run and upping his batting average to .389. He'll likely be in his usual leadoff slot on Thursday night's series finale.

Yankees Vs. Twins: New York Falls 6-5 On Wednesday Night

Staten Island native Jason Marquis held the New York Yankees to four runs in five innings of work for his first win of the season and his first win with the Minnesota Twins. One night after winning, the Yankees lost their second game of the series to the visiting Twins.

Hiroki Kuroda failed to get through five innings. He was pulled with one out in the fifth after allowing the Twins to score all six of their runs. The Yankees bullpen finished the game, giving their hitters a chance to get it back, but the Twins bullpen proved to be just as effective.

Justin Morneau took Kuroda deep twice. Chris Parmelee had two hits.

Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter both sent one out, Jeter a ninth inning solo shot that put the Yanks within one run.

The two teams close out the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. before a weekend trip to Boston.

Yankees Vs. Twins, Game 3 Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Pitching Matchup And More

Following C.C. Sabathia notching his first win of the season, the New York Yankees will look to win the series against the Minnesota Twins behind Hiroki Kuroda.

Kuroda has been a mixed bag thus far after signing a one-year, $10 million dollar deal to come over from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In his first game as a Yankee, Kuroda gave up four runs in a loss to Tampa Bay. However, he rebounded with a remarkable performance against the Angels in his home debut, throwing eight shutout innings.

Opposing Kuroda is Jason Marquis. The 33-year-old New York native is making his first career start for the Twins. Marquis pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals last year, compiling a 8-6 record and a 4.43 ERA.

Despite being on seven different teams in his 12-year major league career, this will be the first game Marquis starts for an American League team.

The Bronx Bombers are ready to bring out the welcome wagon.

Yankees-Twins Score: CC Sabathia Earns First Win Of The Season As New York Romps 8-3

CC Sabathia got off to a slow start to the season, pitching a 6.35 ERA in his first two starts. He appeared to be in for another shaky outing early against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, giving up three runs in his first three innings. He did not give up another run over his next 4 1/3 innings, however, as the New York Yankees went on to an 8-3 victory.

Sabathia has a reputation as a notoriously slow starter, going 18-14 in April over his career. He didn't allow another hit after giving up his third run on a Jamey Carroll single to right center, however, and at one point retired 13 straight batters. Meanwhile, the Yankees' bats heated up in the third. Chris Stewart hit a single to left field that advanced Curtis Granderson and Eduardo Nunez past home plate. The hit gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead that they would never relinquish.

David Robertson and Cory Wade pitched relief, and combined just gave up one hit over the final 1 1/3 innings. Francisco Liriano started for the Twins but was pulled in the third inning after giving up his fifth earned run.
