Yankees vs. Tigers, 2012 ALCS Game 1: New York reacts to loss of Derek Jeter

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Yankees lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, 6-4, Saturday night. The rollercoaster game ended in heartbreaking fashion for the home team.

New York Yankees fans rode a wave of emotions Saturday night as they watched their team suffer a heartbreaking 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. After witnessing another improbable comeback, thanks to another bottom-of-the-ninth home run from Raul Ibanez, New York fell in 12 innings and lost shortstop and captain Derek Jeter for the remainder of the season due to a fractured ankle.

Here's how the SB Nation blog Pinstriped Bible reacted to the loss:

The other culprit was the offense. Three seperate innings saw the bases loaded and no runs scored. No runs were scored other than in the ninth. The 2012 Yankees RISP Fail tradition continued today.

Of course, the biggest loss wasn't showcased on the scoreboard, but on the field when Jeter left the game via help from the team's athletic trainer and manager Joe Girardi. After the game, the Yankees announced he will not play for the rest of the season. The news was not taken well by New York fans.

The heart-breaking loss after a pretty amazing comeback to tie the game now hurts just a little more, as Jeter was one of the only bright spots on offense the past six games. Without him, more pressure will now fall to Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, and Curtis Granderson to actually start hitting if the Yankees hope to avoid elimination.

Game 2 of the ALCS will be played Sunday (4 p.m. ET on TBS) and will feature the Yankees' Hiroki Kuroda (16-11) opposing the Tigers' Anibal Sanchez.
