The New York Yankees have defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 3-1, in Game 5 of the ALDS on Friday. The Yankees move on to the ALCS and face the Detroit Tigers, who eliminated the Oakland A's on Thursday night.
CC Sabathia was dominant. He went through seven scoreless innings before the Orioles finally broke through in the eighth inning. He finished with nine strikeouts, while allowing just one run, in a complete game.
Raul Ibanez got the Yankees on the board when he singled home Mark Teixeira in the fifth. Teixeira had reached on New York's first hit of the night off Orioles' starter Jason Hammel, then advanced to second on a stolen base.
Derek Jeter scored the second run when Ichiro Suzuki drove him in from first on a double in the right-center gap. Curtis Granderson then added a third run for the Yankees with a solo home run off reliever Troy Patton.
The Orioles' bats came to life in the eighth inning. Lew Ford knocked home Matt Weiters on a single to left to get Baltimore on the board. The O's then loaded the bases with one out. Sabathia struck out Nate McLouth then got JJ Hardy to ground out to retire the side and keep the Yankees up 3-1.
The Yankees will face the Tigers in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
