Countdown To Derek Jeter's 3,000th Hit: Pair Of Singles Brings Him To 2,988

Derek Jeter has said he would “love” to reach the 3,000-hit plateau during the New York Yankees’ current homestand. Jeter got that effort off to a good start Tuesday night, going 2-for-5 in a 6-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox to bring his hit total to 2,988.

Jeter got an infield single and a line drive single to center field. Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia also took a hit away from him with a nice back-hand play on a one-hope line drive.

The game marked the first of a 10-game homestand for New York. Jeter now needs 12 hits in his next nine games to reach the 3,000-hit mark. He would become the first player in baseball history to get 3,000 hits as a a New York Yankee.

Jeter is hitting .263 this season and has 62 hits in 56 games played. At his current pace the 36-year-old shorstop would finish the current homestand with 2,998 hits, two short of the milestone. So, he is going to have to pick up the pace a bit.
