Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher Have Options Picked Up By Yankees

Well, forget all that talk about the New York Yankees pursuing free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran to play right field. And forget that stuff about second baseman Robinson Cano’s agent Scott Boras asking for a new contract for Cano. The Yankees have picked up the options on both players.

Swisher’s option is for $10.25 million and means he will be the Yankees’ right fielder for at least one more season. Swisher batted .260 with an .822 OPS, tying for fifth among big league switch-hitters in home runs (23) and ranking seventh in RBIs (85).

Cano’s option was for $14 million. The 29-year-old emerged as the Yankees best hitter in 2011, making the All-Star team for the second straight time. He led the Yankees with a .302 average and posted an .882 OPS, slugging 28 homers and driving in a career-high 118 runs. Cano also ranked second in the Majors with 81 extra-base hits.

The Yankees are still working on a deal for CC Sabathia, who can opt out of his contract this offseason.
