New York Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia chose not to opt out of the final four years of his contract and instead signed a one-year, $25 million extension that will keep him with the team at least through 2016. He has a $25 million vesting option for 2017 and a $5 million buyout for that year.

The New York Yankees have offered both left-handed starter CC Sabathia and general manager Brian Cashman contracts for the coming season, but neither has signed, according to a report Monday from ESPN New York.
Though Sabathia has not yet filed for free agency, he is expected to opt out of the final four years of his contract and test the free-agent market, although he still could wind up signing a new deal with the Yankees afterward. Cashman has had the final version of his contract offer since Saturday is expected to sign soon, a source told ESPN New York.
"All the terms and conditions are done," said the source, who declined to provide details of the contract. "My understanding is (Cashman) was going over it with his lawyer (Saturday night)."
Cashman's three-year, $6 million contract expires Monday, while Sabathia has completed four years of his seven-year, $161 million contracted, after which he is allowed to opt out for free agency if he so chooses.

Some of the pieces for the 2012 New York Yankees might fall into place this weekend. Reports are indicating that General Manager Brian Cashman, whose contract expires at the end of this month, has agreed to a new three-year-deal to stay on as Yankee GM.
It appears that Cashman’s first order of business will be trying to keep CC Sabathia, the team’s ace left-handed starting pitcher, from hitting the free-agent market. Sabathia can opt out of his contract once free agency begins, but a report Friday indicated that the Yankees and Sabathia’s representatives are trying to reach a deal this weekend to prevent that from happening.
The major question for the Yankees is how far beyond the four years and $92 million Sabathia has left on his contract the organization is willing to go to keep the 31-year-old in pinstripes.
It seems we may know the answer to that before the weekend is over.
