Red Bulls-Chivas USA Score: 0-0 Draw Puts New York In First Place

The New York Red Bulls retook sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with a 0-0 tie against CD Chivas USA Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. With the draw, the Red Bulls (6-4-11) improved to 29 points and opened a one-point lead over Philadelphia and Columbus. New Red Bulls goalkeeper Frank Rost, who signed with the club Wednesday, earned a shutout in his first MLS start.

New York nearly won the match in stoppage time when Juan Agudelo received the ball inside the 18-yard box and tried to curl his shot around a defender and inside the far post, only for the ball to roll just wide.

The Red Bulls' best opportunity came on a long blast to Jan Gunnar Solli that Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy tipped off the crossbar.

Rost, making his first appearance for the Red Bulls after being signed as the team's third Designated Player following a 20-year career in the German Bundislaga, was never seriously challenged during the match.

NOTE: To make room on the roster for Rost, the Red Bulls loaned goalkeeper Greg Sutton to Montreal of the NASL. Sutton must clear MSL waivers first. Sutton started 10 games in goal for the Red Bulls this season, posting a record of 3-2-5 and a 1.50 goals against average.

Frank Rost Expected To Debut For Red Bulls Saturday Night

The newest New York Red Bull, goalkeeper Frank Rost, is expected to be in the net Saturday night when the Red Bulls (6-4-10) face Chivas USA (5-7-7) in Carson, Ca. Saturday night (10:30 p.m. ET, MSG). Rost, the Red Bulls third Designated Player, was signed this week from Hamburg SV in the German Bundislaga.

The Red Bulls have used three different players in goal this season (Bouna Coundoul, Greg Sutton, and Alex Horwath), and that inconsistency has resulted in numerous errors that have cost the team points on several occasions.

Rost brings a wealth of experience to the club, having spent nearly 20 years playing in the German Bundesliga. As of Saturday afternoon there was still no word on which keeper the Red Bulls would drop, although Sutton's absence from practice on Friday is likely telling.

Rost practiced Friday for the first time with his new team. See the video below for his thoughts, as well as those of coach Hans Backe and general manager Erik Soler.

New York, 1-2-3 in its last six Major League Soccer matches, is coming off a disappointing 1-0 home loss to rivals DC United. To add insult to injury, the only goal in that match was scored by former Red Bull Dwayne De Rosario.
