Mets-Diamondbacks Final Score: R.A. Dickey Dominates As Mets Win 5-1

The New York Mets have not played good baseball over the past month. And R.A. Dickey has looked human over his last half-dozen starts. Those two factors coupled together against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field didn't seem like a recipe for success.

But what Dickey did in pitching seven strong innings in the Mets' 5-1 win, their third win in their last 16 games was be an ace. Play stopper. Dickey has struggled to change speeds with his knuckleball successfully over his past few starts, but he did so in this one, striking out eight, giving up three hits and walking three in an outing in which the only blemish was an unearned run. He improved his record to 14-2 and it was his first outing allowing two runs or fewer in exactly one month.

Mired in a rut of his own, David Wright knocked in the game's first run in the first inning on a double that scored Daniel Murphy. It was impossible to expect him to keep up his torrid pace, but the third baseman has cooled considerably of late, as he has only six hits over his last 39 at-bats.

Receiving the start against the left-handed Joe Saunders, Scott Hairston does what he always seems to do against southpaws, and that's hit. His first-inning double sent home Wright, and his fifth-inning single plated the third baseman, who had walked, as well. Hairston has a .261 average, 12 home runs and 41 RBI on the year -- with an excellent .308/.341/.671 with nine of his homers against lefties. It's no wonder the Mets have received trade interest in the 32-year-old. And there's no doubt that general manager Sandy Alderson should part ways with him if he can receive at least a mid-tier prospect in return.

Daniel Murphy continued his hot stretch with a two-hit day that included an RBI, and Andres Torres also had two hits and two runs. Jon Rauch pitched a clean eighth inning and Bobby Parnell had a strong two-strikeout ninth inning.

Mets Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Despite Three Davis Home Runs, New York Loses 6-3

First baseman Ike Davis tried to single handily keep the Mets afloat on Saturday night, but his three solo home runs weren't enough, as New York fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks by a final score of 6-3.

The Diamondbacks scored three runs in the first two innings off of starting pitcher Chris Young, who only went four innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs.

Davis hit his first bomb of the night in the second inning and made the score 3-2 in the top of the fourth with another homer. But the Diamondbacks put the game out of reach half an inning later thanks to a two run blast by catcher Miguel Montero and an RBI single by center fielder Gerardo Parra. Davis hit his third and final homer of the night in the sixth inning and later singled to finish the game 4-4. The rest of the Mets lineup finished with five hits.

The loss drops New York to 48-53, while Arizona improves to 51-50. The fourth and final game of the series will be played Sunday at 4:10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Mets At Diamondbacks Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers

The New York Mets (48-52) have split the first two games of their four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 3-1 win in Game 1 and an 11-5 loss in Game 2. The third game of the series will be Saturday night.

Chris Young (2-4 3.91 ERA) will be on the mound for New York, facing Ian Kennedy (8-8 4.20 ERA) for Arizona. Young has an unimpressive record and hasn’t had a win in five starts, but he has given up only two runs in each of his last two starts while recieving only three total runs in support. The Mets will have to do better than that against Kennedy, who was 11-2 with a 2.64 ERA while visiting New York in 2011. They’ll look to Ike Davis, Andres Torres and David Wright, all of whom had RBI in Friday’s loss.

Mets-Diamondbacks Final Score: New York Loses 11-5 As Pitching Struggles

The New York Mets were within one run at one point, but between a six run second inning from starter Jon Niese and a three run seventh from reliever Elvin Ramirez New York was never able to catch up with The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Mets lost, 11-5.

The Mets got on the board first, going up 2-0 with an Ike Davis solo home run and an RBI single by Andres Torres. Arizona came back in the second, taking Niese for six runs on five hits and an error, including Niese walking in a run. New York made things close again with a three run home run from David Wright, but the Diamondbacks were able to add one run each in both the fourth and fifth innings, then put the game away with the three-run seventh.

The Mets fall to 48-52 with the loss and are now 1-1 in their four game series with the Diamondbacks. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 8:10 p.m. ET.

Mets At Diamondbacks Preview: Game Time, TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers

The New York Mets are looking to win their second straight game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night, and if the Mets win it also would be their first back-to-back wins in a month. The Mets are sending Jon Niese to the mound against the Diamondbacks. He is 7-4 on the year with an ERA of 3.59, and this will be his first match up against the Diamondbacks this year. During his last three starts Niese is 0-1 with an ERA at 4.71, but prior to that stretch he won three straight starts.

Josh Collmenter is getting the start for the Diamondbacks and he has bounced around from being a starter and reliever this year. This season he is 2-2 on the year with a 3.82 ERA in 66 innings pitched, and he faced the Mets in relief back on May 5. In that game he went three innings allowed three hits, struck out three and allowed no runs.

First pitch is at 9:40 p.m. ET and can be seen on SNY or on the radio at WFAN 660.

Mets Vs. Diamondbacks Final Score: Matt Harvey Fans 11 In Debut As New York Wins, 3-1

Matt Harvey (1-0) threw 11 strikeouts Thursday night, setting a New York Mets franchise record for the most strikeouts in an MLB debut. He also earned the first win of his young career as the Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in the opening game of a four-game series at Chase Field to snap a six-game losing streak.

Harvey passed Bill Denehy and Tom Seaver for the record, both of who threw eight strikeouts in their debuts just three days apart during the 1969 season. Harvey gave up just three hits and three walks on the night. He left two men on base when he was relieved with two outs left in the sixth inning. Josh Edgin forced two outs to preserve the shutout for Harvey, however.

Harvey also became the first major league player since 1900 to notch at least 10 strikeouts and two hits in a debut. He went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single and a double.

Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley (11-6) wasn't nearly as spectacular. He gave up three runs off nine hits while striking out three in his 5 1/3 innings. Scott Hairston doubled to deep right to score Ruben Tejada and Daniel Murphy in the first inning. Rob Johnson gave the Mets a 3-0 lead with a fourth inning sac fly to score Andres Torres.

After Arizona got on the board with a run in the eighth inning, Tim Byrdak promptly hit two straight batters to put the tying runs on base. He fanned Justin Upton with straight sliders to preserve the 3-1 Mets lead, however. Bobby Parnell put the tying runs on base with one out to go in the ninth inning, but eventually earned his third save of the season by striking out Jason Kubel.

Jon Niese (7-4, 3.59 ERA) will start Game 2 of the series Friday at 9:40 p.m. ET for the Mets. Josh Collmenter (2-2, 3.82) will be the starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks.

Matt Harvey Set Mets Debut Record With 11 Strikeouts

Matt Harvey threw 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 scoreless innings (106 pitches) on the mound for the New York Mets on Thursday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He surpassed the previous Mets record of eight strikeouts by a debut pitcher set by Bill Denehy and Tom Seaver during the 1969 season.

The 11 strikeouts were the most by a debut pitcher in Major League Baseball since Stephen Strasburg famously struck out 14 in his 2010 debut with the Washington Nationals. Harvey gave up just three hits and three walks. His first walk didn't come until the fourth inning.

Harvey also thrived at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a single and a double. Needless to say at this point, he had a marvelous debut.

We will have to wait to see if Harvey comes away with his first major league win as well. The Mets lead 3-0 entering the seventh inning.
