If someone had to guess before the season started which metro area baseball team would be undefeated after three games, they probably wouldn't have said the New York Mets.
They would've been wrong.
The Mets stunned everyone including most of their own fans with a three game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. New York got timely hitting and some serious power from Lucas Duda to propel them to a nice start.
Now, the Mets play host to the Washington Nationals who took two of three from the hapless Chicago Cubs.
Mike Pelfrey will get his first start of the season tonight. Pelfrey has drawn the ire of many New York fans over the past few years and for good reason. The hulking 28-year-old had an incredible first half of the 2010 season, but since then has been a disaster. Pelfrey posted a 4.74 ERA last year in 34 starts for the Amazin's.
Edwin Jackson will make his first appearance as a member of the Nationals after pitching for the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals last season. Jackson pitched well in 2011, to the tune of a 3.79 ERA.

The New York Mets won 7-5 on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in New York. With the win, the Mets swept the series, 3-0.
Jon Niese had a shutout through six innings of work for the Mets before the shutout ended. Niese was charged with 2 earned runs in his first win of the season. He also walked 2 and struck out 7 batters during the six innings. Manny Acosta had the only other earned run out of the Mets bullpen. Frank Francisco picked up the save for New York, his third of the season. Mike Minor picked up the loss for Atlanta while giving up six earned runs in five innings.
The Mets scored in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Braves got their runs in the 7th and 8th innings. Ruben Tejada was 4-5 for New York, had 2 RBI and scored 2 runs. Daniel Murphy also drove in 2 runs and scored one run. David Wright, Jason Bay and Lucas Duda each had an RBI for the Mets. Freddie Freeman ended Nieses' shutout bid with a single in the 7th inning. Despite the brief scare, the Mets' 7-0 lead proved too much for the Braves to come back from.

A day after signing a new, five-year contract extension, Jon Niese will take the mound for the New York Mets who will be searching for a opening-series, three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves (1:10 p.m. on SNY). The Mets are trying for their first 3-0 start since beginning the 2007 season with four straight victories.
Niese, who officially inked a 5-year, $25 million deal on Saturday, will be looking to continue were he left off in last season, which feature him going 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA. The lefty will also need to follow solid performance from Opening Day starter Johan Santana (six-scoreless innings) and R.A. Dickey (six innings and two runs), as they both helped the Mets improve to 2-0.
Meanwhile, third basemen David Wright is off to a solid start to the season, as he's 5-for-8 at the plate with a home run and two RBI.
For the Braves, they will counter Niese with left-handed pitcher Mike Minor, who started 10 games for Atlanta last season. Minor finished the season with a 3.51 ERA.

Right fielder Lucas Duda belted his first and second home runs of the season while catcher Josh Thole collected the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth-inning Saturday to help the New York Mets down the Atlanta Braves, 4-2, at Citi Field. The Mets (2-0) will have a chance for a season-opening, series sweep on Sunday, when Jon Niese (NYM) faces Mike Monor at 1:10 p.m.
Starting pitcher R.A. Dickey pitched a solid six innings allowing two runs, five hits while striking out three batters to collect his first win of the 2012 season. Relief pitchers Bobby Parnell, Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco each pitched scoreless inning to cement the victory. Francisco earned his second saves of the season.
Third basemen Davis Wright continued his solid start to the season by going 3-for-5 with a home run, which helped give the Mets a 2-0 lead in bottom of the fourth inning.
The Braves' Martin Prado smashed a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2, but Thole answered in the bottom half with an RBI single that drove in Ike Davis, who reached on a walk with one out.
Atlanta starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens was created with the loss pitching just 4 1/3-inngins allowing three runs on seven hits.

After shutting out the Atlanta Braves on Opening Day Thursday, the New York Mets look to take the second leg of a three-game series on Saturday. (Game Time: 1:10 p.m ET, TV Schedule: SNY)
Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey takes the hill for the Mets after going 8-13 with a 3.28 ERA last season, including a 2.45 ERA over his last 12 starts. His counterpart will be Jair Jurrgens, who was 13-6 with a 2.95 ERA in 2011.
The Mets earned a 1-0 victory on Opening Day thanks largely to Johan Santana's first start since 2010. Santana went five innings and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five, all after missing the entire 2011 season to recover from surgery to repair the anterior cruciate capsule in his left shoulder. Ramon Martinez picked up the victory in relief when the Mets scored their lone run in the sixth inning.

Johan Santana returned from a long absence to pitch five scoreless innings on opening day and the New York Mets held on for a 1-0 victory on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.
The Mets scored their lone run in the sixth inning when David Wright singled home Andres Torres. That one run was enough for the Mets, who used Santana's first start since Sept. 2, 2010 to spark a team shutout.
Santana, who missed all of 2011 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate capsule in his left shoulder, gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five during five innings. Ramon Ramirez picked up the victory.

Legendary Mets catcher Gary Carter passed away this offseason, but his legacy will forever live on with the franchise he so valiantly played for for five seasons.
As a tribute to his life and career in baseball, the Mets - coaches and players included - will don a number eight Carter jersey during batting practice of today's season-opener against the Atlanta Braves.
The team made the announcement via Twitter, including a photo of the jersey with the message.
Carter, affectionally known as "Kid," played 21 seasons in the MLB, earning 11 All Star bids, three Gold Gloves awards, and a World Series championship with the Mets during the team's infamous 1986 playoff run.
He battled brain cancer in the latter portion of his life, eventually succumbing to the disease on Feb. 12 of this year. The Mets, in further tribute to his legacy, will wear a patch honoring Carter throughout the 2012 season.
