Slam Dunk Contest 2012: Iman Shumpert Won't Compete Due To Knee Injury

Iman Shumpert won't be able to compete in the 2012 Slam Dunk Contest. He has been replaced the Jazz's Jeremy Evans.

Many people were looking forward to watching Shumpert attempt to win the dunk contest with Jeremy Lin grabbing even more assists.

With the voting now completely up to the fans and not voting "experts", most felt that Shumpert was a shoe-in to walk away with the title thanks to Lin being involved and New York being a major market.

Saturday's dunk contest will now feature Paul George of Indiana, Derrick Williams of Minnesota, Chase Budinger of Houston along with Evans.

The rookie's main concern is to just get back on the floor for the Knicks. It's highly doubtful he'll be seen on Wednesday and Thursday against the Hawks and Heat respectively before the All-Star break.

Shumpert's left knee has kept him out of action since defending Dirk Nowitzki in New York's victory over Dallas.

Iman Shumpert Injury Update: Knicks' Rookie Could Return Wednesday

The return of New York Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert looks to be close. On Tuesday night, during the Knicks 90-85 loss to the Toronto Raptors, Shumpert spoke to MSG network's Tina Cervasio and admitted that progression of his injury (a sprained MCL) is coming along faster than he thought and he could return Wednesday when the New York hosts the Charlotte Bobcats (7:30 p.m. on MSG).

"I am feeling really good," said Shumpert. "Everyday I am getting treatment on it, two or three treatments a day. We got a great training staff here. The training staff has been all over me about keeping it straight, keep it elevated at night. I've been following everything they've been telling me. So far, we got good results."

"Today I did a lot, tomorrow we will see how it feels and day-by-day we will make a progression. I did a lot of cutting today, I actually did some dunking. I was surprised myself. I did a lot of moment today. So, It feels good."

During the Knicks' season-opening victory over the Boston Celtics, Shumpert sprained his MCL in the third quarter. The injury forced the Knicks to sign claim guard Jeremy Lin off waivers earlier in the month. The Knicks have really lacked depth at the guard position and the return of Shumpert will be a welcomed return for New York.

Iman Shumpert Injury Update: NYK Guards Suffers Strained MCL

With backcourt depth already an issue for the New York Knicks, an injury to any member of their rotation was something they couldn't afford. Unfortunately, according to Howard Beck of the New York Times, rookie guard Iman Shumpert suffered a strained MCL in the third quarter:

@HowardBeckNYT: Shumpert has a sprained MCL and will not return today

Shumpert provided a nice spark off the bench for the Knicks, as his aggressive play was important with Carmelo Anthony and Toney Douglas in foul trouble in the opening three quarters. Although his shot wasn't falling, Shumpert was able to score 11 points off the bench and was showing some of the promise that made him a first round pick coming out of Georgia Tech.

With this injury, the Knicks will need Landry Fields and Bill Walker to provide some consistency on the offensive end of the court. Toney Douglas has shot the ball well from the field, and he will need to continue to be a scoring threat to make up for the absence of Shumpert.

Stay tuned to SB Nation NBA for the latest on Shumpert and all of the Christmas Day action.
