2011 NBA Trade Rumors: Nets May Reopen Discussions With The Nuggets About Carmelo Anthony

Stay connected for news and updates

About a month ago, Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov went on television and proclaimed that the Nets would no longer be pursuing a trade for Carmelo Anthony. And we believed him, because he is a scary man and he doesn't look like he is one to enjoy a goof. At that point, it looked like Carmelo Anthony wasn't going to be coming to New Jersey.

Well, according to Al Iannazzone of North Jersey.com, hold the phone.

The two sides haven’t spoken since Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov directed general manager Billy King to end talks with Denver last month. But a source said the Nets could get involved again. They continue to have the most to offer in terms of salary-cap flexibility and draft picks.

If it comes down to the wire and the Nuggets have two deals to choose between, the Nets who have the best package, and the Knicks who are the preferred destination, then I'm not sure the Nuggets can afford to choose the Knicks. But that is all assuming that the Nets reengage them in trade talks before the deadline, which is by no means a certainty. SB Nation weighs in.

Observers might sigh at the thought of traveling down this road again. But remember that the Nets have the best package, the biggest need and longest history of engagement here. There's a reason New Jersey was such a big favorite in the 'Melo sweepstakes. It just makes the most sense.
