Terror Alert In Europe Not Stopping Knicks

The New York Knicks are going about their business in Paris despite a travel alert that has been issued by the U.S. government in response to threats of terrorist action.

The New York Knicks practiced Monday for the second game of their preseason tour, with Amare Stoudemire promising to have fun in Paris despite warnings of a possible terrorist attack in Europe.

The Knicks play the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday. They defeated Olimpia Milano 125-113 in Milan on Sunday behind Amare Stoudemire's 32 points.

"We know where to go and the places to visit and again, you have to cherish the moment because it's not often you get a chance to play an NBA game in Paris," said Stoudemire, who joined the Knicks from the Phoenix Suns this summer. "So we got to make sure we enjoy it and have fun."

The U.S. government issued a travel alert Sunday, urging Americans to be vigilant in public places, tourist spots and transportation hubs.

Walsh: Mullin His Preference As Successor

Donnie Walsh knows who should be running the New York Knicks basketball operation if he isn’t. And it’s not Isiah Thomas.

Former St. John’s and NBA star Chris Mullin is his choice.

If I could hire anybody Chris would be the guy," Walsh told The News. “That’s who I want.”

There are no immediate plans for the club to add to their front office. In the past, Garden Chairman James Dolan has been reluctant to sign off on Walsh hiring Mullin. One theory is that Dolan’s next executive hire will be naming Isiah Thomas as consultant, a position Thomas held for one week in last August.

The other theory is that Dolan doesn’t feel the need to add another executive with Glen Grunwald and John Gabriel already on the staff.

Mullin was non-committal when asked about the Knicks, though he did compliment the work Walsh has done in revamping the team.

Somehow, a New York guy like Mullin seems like the right fit to try and return the Knicks to the top of the NBA.

Eddy Curry Out 4-6 Weeks With Hamstring Injury

It looks like Eddy Curry might end his New York Knicks career with a limp, hobbling away with a hamstring injury.

The oft-injured center will miss at least four weeks with a strained right hamstring, the third straight year he was sidelined early in training camp.

“You hate it. He just can’t get over the hump,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said Monday.

Curry was hurt during practice Sunday and had an MRI exam Monday that confirmed the injury. The Knicks said recovery time is a minimum four to six weeks and that Curry is not expected to travel with the team on its trip to Europe for exhibition games in Italy and Paris.

Curry was hospitalized with an illness on the eve of training camp two years ago and tore a calf muscle on the opening day of practices last season. He never recovered to regain a spot in the rotation, playing in just 10 games over those two seasons.

D’Antoni refused to write Curry off yet, but the center who hovers around 300 pounds has never been a natural fit in the coach’s offensive system and was probably already way down the depth chart. Curry is in the final year of his contract and is unlikely to return next season – and the Knicks would likely trade him before then if a team was interested in his $11.3 million expiring contract.

Curry played in just 10 total games the past two seasons for the Knicks.

Stoudemire, Felton Will Be Knicks Captains

The New York Knicks are looking to a couple of their newest players for leadership this season.

Coach Mike D’Antoni today named Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton as co-captains.

Stoudemire gave a speech to the team during the dinner. "It means a lot,‘’ Stoudemire said after today’s practice. "But we all most lead. I told them how important it is for everyone to accept a leadership role and how important it is to maintain health, nutrition, weight room, taking care of your body and cardio.’’

D’Antoni did not have a captain in his first season. Last year, he quietly named David Lee and Chris Duhon in midseason.
