Jeff Cumberland Injury: Jets Backup Tight End Lost For Season

New York Jets backup tight end Jeff Cumberland will be lost to the team for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn Achilles Tendon in Sunday’s 34-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Cumberland had just two catches in the first three games before going down with the injury early in the second quarter.

The Jets signed the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Cumberland as an undrafted free agent prior to last season. He played in just one game in 2010, catching one pass for three years.

According to the Daily News the Jets had hoped to use Cumberland — a pass-catching tight end — in tandem with regular tight end Dustin Keller as the season progressed.

That option has now been taken away from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and quarterback Mark Sanchez. Keller and blocking tight end Matt Mulligan are now the only two tight ends on the Jets’ roster.
