The status of Jets' center Nick Mangold remains unclear at the moment.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan dicussed with the media today the status of center Nick Mangold ahead of the Jets’ Week 3 matchup at the Oakland Raiders. Ryan called Mangold’s status for Sunday “very iffy”, adding “I don’t think it looks very good as far as playing this week.”
Mangold was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain after injuring himself in the Jets’ 32-3 victory last Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s started 82 consecutive games for the Jets, and Mangold himself has said he could go. But with three road games in a row including clashes with the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots on the horizon, the Jets want to be extra careful with their prized center.
“He’s a tough guy, but the trainers will always do what’s in the best interests of the player and we’ll never put a guy out there that shouldn’t be out there,” Ryan said.
If Mangold can’t go, it will be a tough blow to the Jets’ offense who has struggled to run the ball in Weeks 1 and 2. Backup Colin Baxter would take over for Mangold, a player Ryan is comfortable with inserting into the lineup.
“I think he has a good grasp of our system, anyway,” Ryan said of Baxter. “The fact that the terminology is similar to that of where he came from, San Diego, I think he already has a decent grasp of it.”
Ryan also added that he was comfortable with the Jets’ current players and depth, insinuating that the organization would not be seeking help from free agents or via a trade.
New York Jets center Nick Mangold is expected to miss 2-3 weeks due to a high ankle sprain, according to a source Brian Costello of the New York Post cites. The team performed an MRI on the three-time Pro Bowler, who left Sunday's victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first quarter, on Monday.
The injury will end Mangold's ironman streak, as the five-year veteran has never missed a game in his career. He joins Rob Turner among wounded Jets centers, leaving New York with only waiver-wire pickup Colin Baxter available to play the position, at least for now. As Gang Green Nation notes, the Jets could look to sign a more qualified free-agent offensive lineman to fill the void while Mangold recovers. Given how poorly the Jets' line has protected quarterback Mark Sanchez in the pocket, such a move may be a priority.
New York's next three games are against the Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, and New England Patriots; all are on the road. Such a slate would challenge the Jets even if they had their All-Pro center available. But indeed that stretch has gotten more difficult with this news.
The Jets moved to 2-0 in the still young 2011 season with a 32-3 demolition of the Jacksonville Jaguars today in the Meadowlands. The Jets remain in a three way tie with Buffalo and New England for the AFC East lead.
It was over when:
Mark Sanchez squeezed a throw through the arms of Paul Posluszny to Dustin Keller for an 11 yard touchdown pass with 3:50 left in the third quarter. It put the Jets ahead 22-3. The way Jacksonville was moving the ball, the Jaguars had little chance.
Turning Point:
Santonio Holmes shook himself free on a triple move and made a leaping catch on a Sanchez pass in the end zone to give the Jets a touchdown on their opening drive and their first in the opening quarter in almost a calendar year.
Three Stars:
1. Antonio Cromartie: Recovered from a rough opener when he was burned for two touchdowns by picking off a pair of Luke McCown passes and registering an average of over 40 yards on kickoff returns.
2. Dustin Keller: Keller is off to a hot start for the second consecutive year. He was a matchup problem all day, finishing with 6 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.
3. Muhammad Wilkerson: The rookie registered his first career sack in this one. It went for a safety in the first quarter. That gives Wilkerson more sacks in two games than Vernon Gholston registered in three years with the Jets.
Next Up:
The Jets travel to Oakland for the Raiders’ home opener. Oakland is coming off a crushing last second loss to the Bills. The Raiders sit at 1-1.
Here are a few post-game quotes following the New York Jets 32-3 victory Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jets coach Rex Ryan on the performance by the team’s defense:
“I knew where this defense would end up, where it always does. It was great to see them respond. When we tighten things up and we don’t make mistakes and the communications good, we’re tough to beat physically. We have a lot of talent on defense.”
Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio:
“The Jets had their way a little bit. They forced us to turn the ball over more than we can. They deserved to win today and won handily. For us, we’ll get this flight back, make our corrections and get ready for Carolina. That was not what anybody envisioned coming up here, at least not in our locker room. You’ve got to give credit to the Jets. They did a nice job today.”
Jacksonville quarterback Luke McCown:
“It was one of those deals where it was nothing they were doing. I was just off today. That’s all me and I will get better. It’s been a long time, obviously you would like not to have days like this but they happen. I’m not the first guy that’s had a day like this and I am probably not the last. I have to be better.”
Here are a few notes from Sunday’s 32-3 victory by the 2-0 New York Jets over the 1-1 Jacksonville Jaguards.
- The Jets are 5-1 wearing their Titans throwback jerseys, and have now won five consecutive games while wearing them.
- Jacksonville quarterback Luke McCown was just six-of-19 for 59 yards with four interceptions. He finished with a 1.8 passer rating, the lowest ever registered by a quarterback against the Jets. The previous low was 5.4 by Jim Plunkett of the New England Patriots in 1972.
- Antonio Cromartie contributed to the Jets win in all three phases. On defense, he intercepted two passes for 63 yards. On special teams, he averaged 42.5 yards on two kickoff returns. He also entered the game on offense, registering the first rushing attempt of his career when he took a reverse for one yard, the first rushing attempt by a defensive back in the NFL since former Cardinals DB Antrel Rolle carried for nine yards against Vikings (12/09/09).
Later in the second quarter, Cromartie intercepted a McCown pass for his first pick of the season and the 19th of his career, returning the ball 37 yards. He intercepted another pass in the third quarter, returning the ball 27 yards to the one-yard line. His last two interception performance came against the Jets (09/22/08) while he was with San Diego.
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) – Dustin Keller caught six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown, helping the New York Jets destroy the Jacksonville Jaguars, 32-3, in Week 2 action.
Mark Sanchez completed 17-of-24 passes for 182 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Jets (2-0), who rallied past the Cowboys, 27-24, last Sunday.
Shonn Greene carried the ball 16 times for 49 yards and a score for New York. Santonio Holmes hauled in three passes for 42 yards and a touchdown.
The news was not all good for the Jets, who lost All-Pro center Nick Mangold to an ankle injury late in the first quarter. Rookie Colin Baxter took over for Mangold.
Luke McCown connected on 6-of-19 passes for 59 yards and four interceptions for the Jaguars (1-1), who failed to build off a 16-14 victory over the Titans last weekend. McCown’s passer rating was a dismal 1.8.
Blaine Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, played the fourth quarter due to McCown’s poor play. The Missouri product completed 5-of-6 passes for 52 yards.
Maurice Jones-Drew was the lone bright spot for Jacksonville, rushing for 88 yards on 18 carries.
It didn’t take long for the Jets to get on the board. New York covered 65 yards in six plays on the opening drive of the game. Keller’s 33-yard catch put the ball at the 17. On the next play, Sanchez used a play-action pass to find Holmes in the back of the end zone.
Muhammad Wilkerson sacked McCown in the end zone to give the Jets an early 9-0 lead.
Josh Scobee made a 55-yard field goal with 3:02 left in the first quarter to cut the gap to six, 9-3.
Nick Folk responded with a 38-yard field goal early in the second stanza to make it 12-3.
Sanchez was picked off by Rashean Mathis on the next Jets possession. Antonio Cromartie gave New York’s offense another shot with an interception. His 37-yard return put the ball at the 40-yard line of the Jets.
The home team did little on offense and was forced to punt. McCown was picked off by safety Eric Smith next time around. A personal foul call on the Jaguars gave New York the ball at the Jacksonville 28.
Folk’s 45-yard field goal with 26 seconds left in the half made it 15-3.
Following multiple punts to start the second half, the Jets started at their own eight-yard line with 9:08 left. On 3rd-and-4, Sanchez carried the ball seven yards for a fresh set of downs. A defensive illegal contact penalty was added to end of the run. Holmes caught an 18-yard pass to set up New York in the red zone. Keller capped the eight-play drive with an 11-yard TD catch to make it 22-3 with under four minutes remaining.
Cromartie put the game away for the Jets on Jacksonville’s ensuing drive. Cromartie stepped in front of McCown’s pass and sprinted 26 yards down the left sideline. Replay showed that Cromartie was pushed out at the one-yard line. Greene rumbled into the end zone to give New York a 29-3 margin with 1 1/2 minutes left.
McCown could only shake his head after throwing another interception to linebacker Josh Mauga. Folk capitalized with a 23-yarder to make it a 32-3 game early in the fourth.
Gabbert took over for McCown and led the Jaguars to the 24-yard line of the Jets. Jones-Drew was stuffed on fourth down.
Jacksonville leads the all-time series with New York, 6-3…Scobee’s 55-yarder in the first quarter is longest by a Jets opponent at home since Miami’s Pete Stoyanovich hit from 59 yards out in 1989…Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis (strained calf) missed the game…The Jets are 7-1 under head coach Rex Ryan in September.
(Sports Network) – Mark Sanchez improved to 20-12 (.625) as a starter with last week’s win, while his 335 yards against the Cowboys were the second-most in his career (336 at Detroit in November, 2010). He had his eighth career game with two touchdown passes as well, and the Jets are 7-1 in such games. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson led the team with 73 receiving yards against Dallas and needs just 63 more to surpass Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas (4,458) for 15th-most by a running back in NFL history. Tomlinson also needs only one touchdown to become the third player in NFL history with 160 total, joining Jerry Rice (208) and Emmitt Smith (175). Wide receiver Santonio Holmes (6 receptions, 70 yards last week) needs seven receptions to reach 300 for his career, while counterpart Plaxico Burress had a 26-yard touchdown reception against the Cowboys in his Jets debut and first NFL regular-season game since 2008. He needs 83 receiving yards to reach 8,000 for his career, while fellow veteran Derrick Mason needs 90 yards to become the 18th player in league history to reach 12,000. Tight end Dustin Keller (5 receptions, 61 yards, 1 TD) posted his 11th career touchdown catch in last week’s win and had five first-down receptions.
For Jacksonville, linebacker Paul Posluszny has registered two of his four career interceptions against the Jets and cornerback Rashean Mathis has two picks in his past three games against New York. Mathis has a franchise-record 29 interceptions in his career. Safety Dawan Landry, one of several new additions to the Jaguars’ defense, led the team with eight tackles against Tennessee in his Jacksonville debut, while defensive end Matt Roth had a sack in his first game with the Jags. Safety Dwight Lowery, acquired via trade from the Jets on Sept. 3, had an interception last week in his first game with Jacksonville, while cornerback Drew Coleman spent five seasons with the Jets from 2006-10 before signing with the Jaguars over the summer.
The Jets are 12th in points and 15th in total yards (360) through one week, while Jacksonville is sixth and eighth in scoring defense and total defense (292 yards), respectively.
(Sports Network) – Luke McCown’s (175 passing yards) start last week was his first since December of 2007. He had a 70.8 completion percentage against the Titans, tied with Houston’s Matt Schaub for best in the AFC for Week 1. In his last game against the Jets, Maurice Jones-Drew (97 rushing yards, 1 TD) rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 24 attempts in a Jaguars’ victory at the Meadowlands in 2009. Since 2010, the Jaguars have an 8-1 record when Jones-Drew rushes for 90-plus yards. Wide receiver Mike Thomas tied a career-high with eight receptions last week and tight end Marcedes Lewis needs two touchdown catches to surpass Reggie Williams (18) for the third-most in franchise history, behind only Jimmy Smith (67) and Keenan McCardell (30). Lewis, however, is questionable for Sunday’s game due to a calf strain.
New York’s defense registered four sacks against Dallas, getting one each from linebackers Bart Scott and Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith and lineman Mike DeVito. Scott led the team with eight tackles last week, while All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis had his first interception since December of 2009 during the latter stages of the game. In addition, the Jets’ special teams came up with a big play late in the contest, with running back Joe McKnight blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown by Isaiah Trufant which tied the score at 24-24.
Jacksonville was 25th in points scored and 22nd in total yards (323) last week, while the Jets were 16th in scoring defense and 23rd in total yards allowed (390) following the season’s first game.
New York Jets linebacker David Harris practiced Friday on a limited basis and has been listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I do feel good about David playing. I think with Tone (Holmes) and Eric Smith, they’re questionable. They looked good early in the week in practice, but right now, they’re questionable. They did get kind of hurt in practice. It wasn’t a game thing, I don’t believe, with either one of them. Eric just rolled his ankle,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

Jacksonville starting cornerback Derek Cox is out Sunday. Derek Middleton will take his place. Gang Green Nation's take:
Unlike the Jets, the Jaguars usually do not have their corners follow a certain receiver around. They tend to play their corners on one side and allow them to take on whichever receiver comes their way. Middleton could have problems with either receiver. Holmes' crisp routes underneath make him a handful for a reserve. Burress has six inches and almost thirty pounds on him. It could result in Sanchez putting it up and trying to let Plaxico make a play. For more on the Jets, go to Gang Green Nation.
The dramatic way in which the Jets won their opening week game against the Cowboys can cause observers to look away from some of the team’s problems. Had Tony Romo not greatly helped the Jets with two late-game turnovers, the tune would have been a lot different. And one of the areas that would have been a big talking point throughout this week, and still should be, was the Jets’ running game in Week 1, which was downright putrid.
The Jets ran for just 45 yards against Dallas, a number that needs to significantly increase as the season goes on. The Jets headed into this season with Shonn Greene penned as the featured back. And while Greene has shown flashes through his first two professional seasons, he has done little to prove that he can be a true number one NFL running back. His 26 yards on 10 carries in Week 1 simply wasn’t good enough.
Teams in today’s NFL need more than just one productive back, and the Jets’ number two, LaDainian Tomlinson, is aging quickly. Tomlinson did show some pep in Week 1, but mainly as a pass catcher. That is a great role for Tomlinson at this point in his career, but what happens if Greene continues to be ineffective? Rex Ryan and Brian Schottenheimer seem reluctant, to put it lightly, to give second year halfback Joe McKnight a chance. If Greene can’t prove to be a consistent feature back, Tomlinson will have to get more carries than the Jets, and perhaps his legs, would like him to.
Sunday’s matchup with the Jaguars presents a big opportunity for Greene and the Jets’ offensive line to put forward a good ground effort. Make no mistake, the Jaguars have a very solid defense, holding the Titans’ Chris Johnson to just 24 yards in Week 1, while allowing just 43 total rushing yards. But in a game that figures to see the Jets defense control things against the Luke McCown-led Jacksonville offense, the Jets should see a lot of the ball. A good performance on the ground by the Jets would go a long way in helping them move to 2-0.
If it’s more of the same, the concerns could start turning into real problems.
In comparison to many teams around the NFL, the New York Jets (1-0) are healthy heading into a Week 2 meeting at MetLife Stadium with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here is the initial Wednesday injury report for Sunday’s game.
The only key injury the Jets have suffered so far in the 2011 season is the ankle injury suffered by reserve offensive lineman Robert Turner.

It wasn't pretty at times, and it took all 60 minutes to get the job done, but Rex Ryan and the New York Jets ultimately were able to defeat the Dallas Cowboys and begin their 2011 season 1-0. Their Week 2 opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, also won a tightly-contested game in their season opener, defeating the Tennessee Titans 16-14.
The two AFC squads don't have much history playing each other, but the Jaguars certainly have fared well against Gang Green. Jacksonville is 6-2 all time against New York, and has won the previous three outings, the last coming in 2009. Rex Ryan will lead the Jets against the Jaguars for the first time as head coach of the Jets, and something tells me that they'll break that streak this Sunday at the Meadowlands.
Let's take a look at the two teams' series history, broadcast information and other game notes, as well as a few stats for each squads after Week 1 of the young 2011 NFL season.

Plaxico Burress played his first NFL game Sunday night since shooting himself in the leg and subsqequently spending 20 months in prison. Burress caught four passes for 72 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown catch, as his New York Jets defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 27-24. Burress was on the ‘Michael Kay Show’ on ESPN Radio New York Monday to dicuss the game.
Sports Radio Interviews has the full transcript. We have excerpts below:
What did it mean to run out of the tunnel and get the reception that you got from fans on Sunday Night Football?
“It was a surreal feeling. Obviously from the time that me and my family had to wait for the last two-and-half years with everything we’ve been through it is just gratifying. I am just appreciating being able to play in this business for so long and you go out and just be consistent to just have that football field back and get back to the regular season with my family there. To give my son my first touchdown ball. It was just a great feeling.”
When you were on the sidelines during the game did you think about what happened to yourself over the past 2 years? Did you let that wash over you at all?
“I think about it every day. It’s something that when you go through a tragedy, a situation, you can’t help but let it surface from time-to-time. When I’m on the football field I just try to focus on what I have to do and just play my role and doing what I can do to have it impact on my teammates and being a member of the New York Jets. I just try to focus on the task at hand and everything I do is definitely a motivation for me, so I let that kind of fuel me getting through the rough times and just being patient like last night. I didn’t have any catches in the first half. I was saying to myself here it comes and the one thing I have learned is patience.”
