Patriots Down Jets, 30-21: Quick Analysis

The New York Jets fell to 2-3 today with a 30-21 loss to the New England Patriots in Foxborough. New York lost all three games of its three game road trip.

It Was Over When…
Stephen Gostkowski’s 28 yard field goal sailed through the uprights with 1:02 left to make it 30-21 Patriots. It capped a 13 play drive the Pats used to eat up the clock after the Jets had cut it to one score with a touchdown on the previous series.

Turning Point:
On the first play of the second half, Tom Brady found Wes Welker deep for a 73 yard gain, setting up a touchdown to put New England up 17-7. Eric Smith got burned after biting on play action. New England seemed to be in control of the game from that point despite a New York touchdown on the Jets’ next series.

Three Goats:

1. Brian Schottenheimer:The offensive coordinator did not exploit facing what was the worst pass defense in the league entering the game. The protection was good. The running game was working, leaving play action on the table. Until New York’s last drive, the Jets did not try and take shots down the field. New England’s corners squatted on short passes all day. Mark Sanchez hit over 60% of his attempts, but the Jets went three and out on all but three possessions prior to a last drive in garbage time.
2. Eric Smith:Allowed the big play to Welker to start the second half.
3.Donald Strickland: Had problems all day in coverage with Rob Gronkowski.
