The New York Jets waived center Colin Baxter Wednesday, the team announced Tuesday, opening a spot on the 53-man roster.
Baxter started in Weeks 3 and 4 while Nick Mangold nursed a high ankle sprain, but had not dressed for any of the past three games. Backup left guard Matt Slauson became the backup center during Baxter's stint of inactivity.
After going undrafted in the 2011 draft, Baxter signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent in July. He was cut by the Chargers at the end of the preseason and the Jets signed him shortly after, citing his long-term potential.
The 6'3, 310-pound Baxter played three games with the Jets, starting two of them.
The Jets also released offensive lineman Matt Kroul from the practice squad. Kroul appeared in six games for the Jets in 2010 as a defensive tackle, recording two tackles.
