In a matchup of the Eastern Conference's bottom feeders, the New York Islanders took down the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Saturday night in a shootout.
Mark Streit and Frans Nielsen each put home second period goals, and goalie Al Montoya stopped 28 of the 30 shots that he faced. But 60 minutes of regulation time and a five minute overtime weren't enough to settle the score in Montreal, and the two took to a shootout to decide the game's fate.
Each team scored on its opening shootout attempt, but that was followed by consecutive failed attempts from each team, forcing the shootout to continue past the designated three rounds. The Islanders would eventually end the contest in the shootout's sixth round, when Josh Bailey buried his attempt on Montreal's Peter Budaj.
The two teams are now tied with 69 points.
