John Tavares and the New York Islanders wrap up 2011 by hosting the Edmonton Oilers on New Year's Eve .
Tavares scored the go-ahead goal on Thursday during New York's 3-1 victory against Calgary, a beautiful third-period tally that gave New York a 2-1 lead.
"When your best player is your best player in a game, you've got a good chance to win. And '91' was real strong tonight," coach Jack Capuano said of Tavares, who also assisted on Andrew MacDonald's tying goal in the second period. "He hasn't been scoring as much of late, but the chances are there, and he buried one tonight."
The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for New York, which meets another rebuilding team in the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The Oilers have lost two straight and six out of seven.

Islanders Vs. Oilers: New York Routs Edmonton, 4-1
The New York Islanders won their second consecutive game today as they defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a final score of 4-1. The win moves the Isles to 13-17-6 on the season, but they still have work to do if they have any shot of making the playoffs, as they trail the eight seed Toronto Maple Leafs by nine points.
Both the Oilers and Isles had 29 shots and 25 faceoffs won. The big difference in the game was the 16 penalty minutes by the Oilers and the 21 takeaways by the Isles. John Tavares, Matt Moulson, P.A. Parenteau and Matt Martin each scored a goal for the Islanders. Moulson also had two assists.
The Isles next game is on January 3 as they travel to face the Flames to begin a three game road trip.
